An IRS audit can be extremely time consuming and burdensome for a business owner and taxpayer. It is also an extremely invasive intrusion into one’s life. Often times, auditors will bombard taxpayers with questions, extracting specific information that helps their case. Hiring an experienced representative will create a barrier between the IRS and you, as the taxpayer does not need to be present during the audit appointment. Moreover, taxpayers cannot be “put on the spot” and forced to answer specific questions about difficult subjects.

Frequently, records are difficult to obtain for older periods. As a general rule, pursuant to the Internal Revenue Code, taxpayers are entitled to a deduction for expenses so long as they were actually incurred, regardless of whether records exist. As a Certified Public Accountant and experienced forensic accountant, Katz&Co are well versed in methods of reconstructing these expenses and presenting them to the auditor in a logical format. We have successfully resolved audits with limited records or no records and receipts at all.

Why Katz&Co as your representative?

Through or long experience we know what sparks an audit and how to deal with an audit. Our staff has decades of experience   We know how the IRS thinks and how to best serve your interests.

No matter how simple the request for information may be, we never advise any taxpayer to represent themselves in an IRS audit. Even if you have been absolutely honest and filed everything correctly, meeting with the IRS can be an intimidating experience. The IRS auditor represents the IRS and is looking to find errors on your return. Shouldn’t you have someone on your side to ensure that the IRS doesn’t take advantage of you? Superior IRS representation should be considered a strategic business asset.

IRS Agent and Auditors are trained investigators. Although they may appear friendly during the audit, don’t forget that their job is to find mistakes on your tax return and perhaps find unreported income. If an Agent or Auditor discovers that you failed to report a significant amount of your income on several years of tax returns, did you know that you could be faced with criminal prosecution?

Handling the audit on your own is a big mistake! For instance, do you know the “trick questions” an Agent or Auditor might ask you during the initial interview? IRS representation by Katz&Co will protect you from these potentially costly traps.

Snowballing tax penalties and interest loom large for some taxpayers. This problem can quickly escalate, as an accumulation of penalties may double the amount of tax owed.

Current IRS rules allow for tax penalty abatement of tax penalties and of interest or of a refund when there were extenuating circumstances contributing to this problem, or if you had a good reason for falling behind in the first place. In order to accomplish this, we will need to show the IRS that you had “reasonable cause” for not paying your income taxes.

What qualifies as a reasonable cause? It depends on the circumstances involved. The IRS procedures for deciding who qualifies for tax penalty abatement and for what reason seem to differ in each case. The following are just a few circumstances under which you can qualify for tax penalty abatement. Some of the most common reasons are:

  • If you are involved in embezzlement or theft
  • Fire, flood, or other disasters beyond your own control
  • Bad accounting practice or bad tax advice
  • Serious personal health issues
  • Serious health issues of an immediate family member
  • Death of a family member

We will show the IRS that you used “due diligence” and “no neglect” in attempts to repay the income tax debt that you owe and will get you the most favorable settlements available.
