Business Valuations

Katz & Co., P.A. has provided business valuations on many closely held companies, covering a wide range of industries and for a variety of purposes.  Our wealth of experience ensures that every assignment gets the proper attention and resources needed to develop a well-reasoned, credible conclusion or calculation of value.

Business Valuations Applications

There are many reasons to conduct a business valuation, and a company may have different values depending on the purpose of the valuation.  Some of the more common purposes for conducting a business valuation include:

  • Gift & estate taxation
  • Divorce
  • Equity funding
  • Inheritance taxation
  • Charitable contributions
  • Employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs)
  • Dissenting stockholder or shareholder oppression actions
  • Marital dissolution
  • Bankruptcy reorganization
  • Mergers and acquisitions
  • Buy-sell agreements

Business Valuations Methodologies

When conducting business valuations, Katz & Co., P.A. employs the most appropriate approach based on the purpose of the business valuations.  The three main approaches include:

  • Income Approach
  • Market Approach
  • Asset-Based Approach

With each of these approaches, it is important to note that a company’s value may need to be adjusted for discounts and/or premiums.  While business valuation is not an exact science, with different evaluation methods returning different values based on the same information, it is critical that the evaluator has proper financial statements, current real estate appraisals (where necessary) from a reputable and independent company, and access to historical tax returns.

Katz&Co professionals are up to date on local and regional business transactions and will put your business appraisal in context with the realities of the current market.
